no thumbs appear on my forum_home either by the way... and it is set via the plugin system

Check that 'can view files' is set to Yes in the Usergroup Manager for whatever usergroups you'd like to have that permission.

I seem to have the same problem...
And Can View files is set to yes for admins ... website url - www.cruiseirl.com photolog install - http://www.cruiseirl.com/photoplog/index.php
