Watermarking optional by user

In my forums a few users have complained about us watermarking the images they upload, they claim they feel like we have "taken" the picture that actually belongs to them. This is a complicated issue and I didn't bring it up to be discussed here, just as an intro to make a suggestion.

I think it would be nice if we gave the member the option to have his/her images watermarked or not, at least in the categories they're allowed to upload to. I believe most of the forums with photoplog out there have categories which belong to the forum and others where the member upload their own pics. This would allow them to freely protect or not their images being hotlinked or copied or wahtever if they feel like, or if they think the forum doesn't have the right to watermark their images, they just mark the appropriate option.

I'm suggesting this in the interest of preserving the gallery's popularity. Sure, I as the owner of the forum might just choose to watermark all images, but then I'd be driving some users away from our gallery.

Anyway, ust a suggestion.
